Indonesia - West Sumatra - Bukittinggi

The highlands around Bukittinggi are the cultural homeland of the Minangkabau. There's some magnificent scenery on the dramatic 89km trip from Padang to the hill town of Bukittinggi. The road climbs through terraced rice paddies with exquisite high-peaked Minangkabau houses. The combination of rich volcanic soil and ample rainfall the region is an excellent growing area and full of tropical rainforest. At 930m above sea level, although Bukittinggi itself is polluted but the air is still fresh and it can be quite cold.

The town is sometimes referred to as Kota Jam Gadang (Big clock town), after its best known landmark - the Minangkabau style clock tower that overlooks the large market square. Today’s Bukittinggi is a busy market town and the centre of Minangkabau culture.
